Building a Global Network of Communities

Our vision is a connected network of self-determined communities, each addressing its own challenges with our support. For now, Habiba Community is our starting point — here you can see all the projects underway and those in preparation.

Projects at Habiba Community

WOMAD Skill Building

WOMAD is a platform for self-expression, income generation, and cultural preservation. We facilitate training in traditional and modern textile crafts, linking skilled artisans with sustainable market pathways..To train Bedouin women further in their artisanal crafting skills they need two sewing machines and yarn, glass beads, and fabrics. A small allowance for a local female teacher will guarantee that the women learn effectively under culturally appropriate conditions .

Integrated Coral Monitoring

This project establishes a locally grounded coral monitoring program along 10 km of reef in Nuweiba. By training Bedouin and volunteer divers to collect standardized data on coral diversity and reef health using GoPro HERO10 cameras, water quality sensors, GPS, and GIS mapping tools (including DeepReefMap AI), we build the foundation for long-term conservation and restoration in the Gulf of Aqaba.

Learning Center

The after school Learning Center at Habiba Community provides free, informal education to Bedouin children in Nuweiba. It creates a safe, inspiring space where kids can explore literacy, math, languages, creative expression, and environmental awareness outside the constraints of the formal school system. With a focus on confidence-building, cultural identity, and holistic development, this center bridges educational gaps and nurtures the next generation of changemakers in South Sinai.

Cultural Diets & Nutrition

We aim to study the traditional Bedouin diet to understand evolving
nutrition patterns and identify nutrient gaps in the context of ongoing westernisation and cultural erosion. These insights shall inform crop selection on the community farms and backyard gardens and guide tailored interventions for healthier diets.

Sandponics Pilot with Leedana

In collaboration with Leedana, an Egyptian-Canadian startup, we’re piloting a sandponics system which is a low-tech, closed-loop method that integrates fish and vegetable production in arid, sandy regions. Utilizing sand as both a biofilter and growing medium, this system recycles over 90% of water and operates with minimal energy, making it ideal for desert agriculture.

Agrivoltaics Pilot with G-STIC

As part of the G-STIC initiative, we’re piloting agrivoltaic systems on our
greenhouse structures to harness solar energy for desalinating groundwater, powering farming activities, and supplying surplus energy to local households. This project is a consortium effort with Engazaat, 3E, ORG Permanent Realities, and is funded by the Flemish Government.

Backyard Gardens for Widowed Women

This project supports widowed and vulnerable women in Nuweiba by
establishing small-scale, self-sustaining backyard gardens. Habiba Community prepares the soil, installs basic irrigation, provides seeds and training in ecological farming practices to empower women to grow their own food and reclaim food sovereignty. Through workshops on crop diversity, pest management, and seasonal planning, these gardens become spaces of healing, nourishment, and independence
